Child Mind Institute has announced the 2026 cycle of its prestigious SNF Global Center Research Fellowship, an international opportunity designed to support early-career researchers working in child and adolescent mental health across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
The fellowship, offered through the organization’s SNF Global Center for Child and Adolescent Mental Health, provides substantial funding and long-term career development support to researchers committed to addressing critical mental health challenges affecting children and young people in their countries.
The program is widely recognized for helping emerging researchers build globally informed yet locally grounded research initiatives capable of transforming mental health outcomes in underserved communities.
The SNF Global Center Research Fellowship is structured as a four-to-five-year program that enables fellows to lead independent research projects as principal investigators while advancing their academic careers.
According to the program announcement, fellows may receive funding of up to US$550,000 to support both their research activities and professional development over the duration of the fellowship.
The initiative specifically targets innovative researchers based at leading academic institutions in LMICs who are working to develop evidence-based solutions to child and adolescent mental health challenges.
The fellowship emphasizes locally relevant research that can generate measurable impact while contributing to global scientific knowledge in mental health.
The fellowship is part of the broader efforts of the SNF Global Center for Child and Adolescent Mental Health to strengthen mental health systems, research capacity, and evidence-based interventions globally.
Mental health challenges among children and adolescents continue to represent a major global public health concern, particularly in low-resource settings where access to mental health services, research infrastructure, and trained professionals remains limited.
Through this fellowship, the Child Mind Institute seeks to empower researchers whose work has the potential to improve prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and mental health support systems for young people in their home countries and beyond.
The organization highlighted that fellows’ projects are expected to address local priorities while contributing insights relevant to international mental health research and policy discussions.
A distinctive aspect of the fellowship is its combination of local institutional support and international research collaboration.
While fellows remain based at their home institutions throughout the program, they also gain opportunities for international stays and collaboration with global experts in child and adolescent mental health research.
According to the Child Mind Institute, this blended approach ensures that fellows’ research remains deeply connected to the realities and needs of their local communities while benefiting from international expertise, mentorship, and academic networks.
The fellowship also aims to strengthen long-term research leadership capacity within LMIC institutions by enabling fellows to build sustainable research programs and international collaborations.
Eligible institutions located in LMICs may nominate up to two candidates for the 2026 fellowship cohort. Only candidates formally nominated by an eligible institution will be invited to apply for the program.
This nomination-based system is intended to ensure institutional support for applicants and strengthen the fellowship’s collaborative academic framework.
Researchers interested in applying are encouraged to engage early with their institutions regarding the nomination process.
The Child Mind Institute has released the full timeline for the 2026 fellowship cycle.
The nomination process officially launches during the week of 2 February 2026. A webinar for nominating institutions is scheduled for 12 March 2026, followed by another webinar for nominees on 23 April 2026.
The online application portal will open on 1 April 2026.
Institutions must submit candidate nominations by 1 June 2026, while the deadline for full fellowship applications is 15 June 2026.
Applications will be reviewed between June and July 2026 by an international panel of experts. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed in August 2026, and selected fellows will be officially announced on 10 October 2026, coinciding with World Mental Health Day.
The fellowship reflects growing international recognition of the need to invest in locally led mental health research in LMICs.
Many low- and middle-income countries continue to face significant shortages in mental health professionals, funding, and research infrastructure, particularly in child and adolescent mental health services.
By supporting early-career researchers through long-term funding, mentorship, and international collaboration opportunities, the Child Mind Institute aims to strengthen research ecosystems and contribute to sustainable improvements in mental health outcomes for young people globally.
Researchers interested in the fellowship can access additional information, including the Request for Applications, informational webinars, and frequently asked questions, through Child Mind Institute.

The SNF Global Center Research Fellowship represents a significant opportunity for emerging researchers dedicated to advancing child and adolescent mental health research and creating meaningful impact within their communities and across the global mental health sector.
