    The selected candidate will join the IPBES Secretariat in Bonn, Germany, and support global communication and outreach initiatives that promote biodiversity science and policy to diverse audiences worldwide.

    Key Responsibilities

    The Associate Public Information Officer will support UNEP and IPBES communication efforts through:

    Media and Public Information

    • Researching and analyzing environmental and biodiversity-related topics.
    • Developing media communication products and press materials.
    • Drafting press releases, briefing notes, newsletters, reports, brochures, and multimedia content.
    • Producing communication materials for global audiences and stakeholders.
    • Monitoring media coverage and evaluating communication campaign effectiveness.

    Digital Communications

    • Supporting social media engagement and outreach activities.
    • Managing and updating digital communication assets.
    • Conducting photo, graphic, and multimedia research.
    • Contributing to website and content management systems.

    Stakeholder Engagement

    • Building and maintaining relationships with journalists and media organizations.
    • Expanding global media contact databases.
    • Supporting strategic communication partnerships.
    • Organizing press briefings, conferences, interviews, and outreach events.

    Data and Reporting

    • Collecting and analyzing communication data.
    • Identifying communication trends and audience engagement patterns.
    • Supporting evidence-based communication planning and reporting.

    Required Qualifications

    Education

    Applicants must possess:

    • An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Communication, Journalism, International Relations, or a closely related field.

    Alternatively:

    • A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted.

    Desirable:

    • Training or qualifications in Data Analytics, Business Analytics, or Data Science.

    Work Experience Requirements

    Candidates must have:

    • At least two years of progressively responsible experience in public information, public relations, external communications, or related fields.
    • Experience working within the United Nations or a comparable international organization.
    • A minimum of one year of recent experience building and maintaining top-tier global media relations.

    Desired Experience

    The following experience will be considered an asset:

    • Communicating biodiversity science and policy to non-specialist audiences.
    • Supporting IPBES-related activities and programmes.
    • Managing social media communications within the UN system or an intergovernmental organization.
    • Organizing large international conferences, meetings, and stakeholder events.
    • Developing communication strategies and media engagement plans.
    • Experience with web content management systems.
    • Data analytics and audience engagement analysis.

    Language Requirements

    Required

    • Fluency in English (reading, writing, listening, and speaking).

    Desirable

    • Knowledge of French or Spanish.

    Candidates with multilingual communication skills will have a competitive advantage in this international role.
