    • Achieve a minimum average of 65% in the relevant Master’s degree.

    For students still completing their Master’s degree:

    • Applications will be assessed using Honours or BEng results.
    • A minimum average of 65% is required.
    • Scholarship offers may be withdrawn if the final Master’s degree result falls below the required threshold.

    Approved Research Projects

    SARAO will only consider applicants who select an approved doctoral research project for 2027.

    Before submitting an application, candidates must:

    • Review the list of approved doctoral projects on the SARAO website.
    • Contact the project supervisor.
    • Discuss qualifications, research interests, and suitability for the project.
    • Obtain written confirmation from the supervisor agreeing to supervise the doctoral research.

    Applicants must upload a signed supervision-agreement letter on official university letterhead. Applications submitted without this document will not be considered.

    Required Supporting Documents

    Mandatory documents include:

    1. Identity document or passport.
    2. Complete academic transcripts covering all university studies.
    3. Updated curriculum vitae (CV).
    4. Signed supervisor-agreement letter.
    5. Motivation letter of approximately 1,000 words.

    • Publication record.
    • Suitability for doctoral-level research.

    Applications lacking the required reference letters will not be considered.

    Scholarship Benefits and Funding

    The SARAO Freestanding Doctoral Scholarship provides comprehensive financial support.

    Funding includes:

    • Annual scholarship stipend of R210,000.
    • International student fees paid in full for eligible non-South African students.
    • Annual travel grant of R55,000.
    • Research equipment grant of R35,000.
    • One return home travel ticket per year for eligible international students.
    • Repatriation costs where required.
    • Emergency medical insurance.
    • Assistive technology grant of up to R20,000 for students with disabilities.

    The maximum duration of funding is three years.
