    Plan International has announced a new global recruitment opportunity for an experienced Deployable Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Gender in Emergencies Specialist to join its international Core Surge Team.

    The humanitarian organisation is seeking a highly skilled professional capable of deploying rapidly to emergency situations worldwide to strengthen gender-responsive humanitarian programming and ensure protection for vulnerable populations, particularly girls and young people affected by crises.

    Role Focuses on Gender Equality and Emergency Response

    According to Plan International, the specialist will play a central role in integrating gender equality, inclusion, and protection from gender-based violence into emergency humanitarian responses across multiple countries.

    The position requires rapid deployment, often within 72 hours of emergencies, to support country teams responding to humanitarian crises.

    The organisation says the role is designed to ensure that:

    • Gender equality remains central to emergency response efforts.
    • GBV prevention and response programmes are strengthened.
    • Girls and vulnerable populations receive adequate protection.
    • Humanitarian programming aligns with international standards.
    • Local organisations and partners receive technical support.

    Specialist Expected to Deploy Globally

    The successful candidate will be expected to spend up to nine months each year deployed to humanitarian emergencies in different regions around the world.

    Deployments may involve:

    • High-pressure emergency settings.
    • Extended working hours.
    • Short-notice international travel.
    • Assignments lasting up to three months at a time.

    Plan International noted that the position requires flexibility, resilience, and the ability to work independently in complex humanitarian contexts.

    Technical Leadership Responsibilities

    The Deployable GBV and Gender in Emergencies Specialist will provide technical leadership and programme support during emergency responses.

    Key responsibilities include:

    • Leading GBV programming, especially for children and adolescents.
    • Ensuring gender mainstreaming across humanitarian interventions.
    • Conducting Rapid Gender Analyses during emergencies.
    • Supporting multi-sectoral humanitarian assessments.
    • Advising senior leadership on gender-responsive programming.

    The role also involves ensuring compliance with international humanitarian standards, including:

    • Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) guidelines.
    • GBV Minimum Standards.
    • Sphere Standards.
    • Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) frameworks.

    Capacity Building and Partnership Support

    A major component of the position involves strengthening the capacity of local partners and humanitarian teams.

    The specialist will be responsible for:

    • Training and mentoring staff and partners.
    • Supporting women-led and girls-led organisations.
    • Building local technical expertise.
    • Promoting accountability to affected populations.
    • Encouraging meaningful participation of women and girls in programmes.

    The organisation says local capacity strengthening remains critical to improving long-term humanitarian effectiveness and sustainability.

    International Representation and Coordination

    The role also includes representing Plan International in humanitarian coordination mechanisms and inter-agency forums.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Participating in GBV and Gender clusters.
    • Coordinating with UN agencies and NGOs.
    • Building partnerships with donors and humanitarian actors.
    • Supporting advocacy and policy engagement.
    • Enhancing Plan International’s global profile in gender equality programming.

    The organisation highlighted that effective coordination is essential for improving humanitarian response quality and avoiding duplication of efforts during crises.

    Flexible Global Location Available

    Plan International confirmed that the role is location-flexible and can be based in any country where the organisation maintains an office and where the candidate already has legal work authorization.

    Eligible locations include several countries across:

    • Africa.
    • Europe.
    • Asia.
    • North America.
    • Latin America.

    Among the eligible African countries listed are:

    • Kenya
    • Ethiopia

    Qualifications and Experience Required

    • Experience working with UN agencies, INGOs, or NGOs.

    Language requirements include:

    • Spanish or Arabic considered an advantage.
