The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA), with support from the Mastercard Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York, has announced the launch of its Early-Career Research Fellowship Program, a prestigious initiative aimed at strengthening Africa’s research capacity and developing the next generation of globally competitive scholars.

The fellowship program will provide funding for up to 42 early-career researchers to undertake advanced research projects at ARUA’s Centres of Excellence (CoEs) and Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence (CoREs) across the continent.

The six-month residential fellowship is designed to give promising African researchers the opportunity to collaborate with leading academics, expand their research networks, and contribute to innovative solutions addressing Africa’s most pressing development challenges.

Fellowship Designed to Strengthen African Research Excellence

The new fellowship initiative aligns with ARUA’s mission of making African universities and researchers globally competitive while contributing knowledge that supports the continent’s socio-economic transformation.

Successful fellows will be hosted at one of ARUA’s 13 Centres of Excellence or 22 Clusters of Research Excellence and will work alongside internationally recognized researchers on cutting-edge projects.

The program also seeks to provide researchers with dedicated time away from teaching responsibilities at their home institutions, allowing them to focus on research, publication, and professional development.

Up to 42 Research Fellowships Available

The fellowship program will run between March 2026 and February 2027, with two available intake periods.

    Applicants can choose between:

    • Option 1: March 2026 to August 2026

    Application deadlines are:

    • 22 January 2026 for Option 1
    • 15 July 2026 for Option 2

ARUA has also emphasized its commitment to gender equity, with at least 70 percent of all fellowships reserved for female researchers.
