Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, has announced an opening for the position of Field Communications Manager based in Abuja, Nigeria. The organization, founded in 1971, is an international, independent medical humanitarian body that provides emergency medical assistance to populations affected by crises in over 60 countries. MSF has maintained a presence in Nigeria for more than 20 years, delivering critical healthcare services to vulnerable communities.
The Field Communications Manager (FCM) will play a strategic role within MSF’s operational communications department in Nigeria. The position focuses on defining, overseeing, and implementing communication strategies that support MSF’s medical humanitarian programs and broader social mission. The FCM will report to the Field Communications Coordinator and will manage key team members, including the Press Officer, Social Media Officer, and Multimedia Officer, while also serving as backup when required.
The primary purpose of the role is to utilize public communications to strengthen MSF’s humanitarian impact, raise awareness of crises, and maintain public support for its mission. The FCM will be responsible for developing and managing communication strategies in alignment with operational needs, including emergencies and crisis situations. This includes identifying underreported issues, advising on messaging and positioning, and ensuring timely and effective communication outputs.
The role involves overseeing media relations, including engagement with national and international media, digital platforms, and other communication channels. The FCM will guide content production, transforming complex medical and operational information into compelling narratives. Responsibilities also include monitoring media and digital landscapes, identifying misinformation risks, and coordinating responses where necessary.
Internally, the FCM will collaborate with key stakeholders such as Heads of Mission, medical coordinators, and humanitarian affairs teams to align communication strategies with operational priorities. The position also requires active participation in the global MSF communications network by providing updates, supporting campaigns, and facilitating media engagement.
In addition to strategic and operational duties, the FCM will manage team members, support their professional development, and contribute to recruitment and onboarding processes. Budget planning and oversight may also be required.
Applicants must possess a university degree in a relevant field such as Journalism, Communication, Development Studies, Political Science, or International Relations. A minimum of four years of professional experience in communications, journalism, or public relations is required, preferably within MSF or another international NGO operating in humanitarian contexts. Strong communication, analytical, and organizational skills are essential, along with the ability to work under pressure and manage multiple projects. Proficiency in English is mandatory, while knowledge of Hausa is considered an advantage.
The role is offered under a national contract with a workload of 208 hours per month. Remuneration will be in accordance with MSF’s salary scale.
MSF is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and strongly encourages applications from women, minority groups, and persons with disabilities. The organization maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward harassment, discrimination, and exploitation, and promotes a work environment built on integrity, teamwork, and respect.
